National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History

Located at one of Dublin’s most impressive, historic sites on the grounds of Collins Barracks, the National Museum is one of Dublin's favourite attractions, and admission is free. This is considered Ireland's premiere museum and has a lovely cafe!

This former military barracks located close to the Phoenix Park and Heuston Station is home to two diverse collections. The Decorative arts collection includes silver, ceramics, glassware, furniture, clothing, jewellery and coins, while the military history collection tells of Ireland’s military and revolutionary past, and is rightly regarded as one of Dublin's best attractions. Some of the fascinating exhibitions include Irish Wars 1919 - 1923, and Soldiers and Chiefs - The Irish at War at Home and Abroad. There are permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibitions.

The National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology is located in the heart of Dublin City close to the Little Museum of Dublin and Trinity College. The stunning museum is home to a great range of iconic Irish treasures, including the Ardagh Chalice, the 'Tara' Brooch and the famous Derrynaflan Hoard.

From Prehistoric Ireland to Ancient Egypt, visitors can see important archaeological artefacts dating from 7000 BC up to the 20th century.

Highlights include the world-famous Iron Age ‘bog bodies’, an exhibition of prehistoric Irish gold, and exhibitons including "The Treasury", "Prehistoric Ireland", and "Clontarf 1014"

Though the National Museum is free, visitors need to book a free ticket online in advance for the NMI - Archaeology. This is to facilitate physical distancing guidelines.

Natural History - Museum Overview

Built in 1856, the National Museum of Ireland - Natural History is housed in one of the most magnificent buildings in Dublin, and indeed Ireland.

Sometimes described as ‘a museum of a museum’, and the "Dead Zoo", the museum is home to a wide-range and comprehensive zoological collection of more than 10,000 exhibits. Visitors can explore Irish mammals, birds, fish and insects, as well as mammals from around the world.

Highlights include imposing skeletons of Ireland’s extinct giant deer and a huge, a huge basking shark suspended from the ceiling, and other mammals from around the world.
